Feel Free to Navigate and Explore! Have Fun!

Dear Parents and school community,

Welcome to the 2011-2012 school year.  While the recent budget cuts have impacted our organization, the KAPPA IV administration, faculty and staff are committed to exploring all available options to provide our scholars with a quality education full of opportunities and possibilities. In fact, our primary goal is to enhance our scholars' individual development and talents each and every day.  Therefore, throughout the year scholars will have an opportunity to participate in several new initiatives and classes at KAPPA IV. The following are just a few of our new enhancements for the 2011-2012 school year: In house library, formal technology class, debate class, school garden and an opportunity to participate in a pageant.

We encourage you to check our website regularly in order to stay updated on the status of upcoming school events, important information and reminders.  Finally, keep in mind that we strive to maximize our resources and efforts in order to provide each individual student with an opportunity to succeed.  If you are interested in volunteering and/or have any ideas please be sure to share your comments with a member of the school community.  On behalf of the KAPPA IV family we are looking forward to making the 2011-2012 school year a success for all!

Thank you.

Dr. Juan Vives, Jr.
Principal, I.A.

WELCOME TO KAPPA IV

KAPPA IV is a distinguished middle school housed in the Percy E. Sutton Educational Complex in Central Harlem. We educate and prepare our scholars to be leaders and productive members of society. We currently accommodate approximately 300 students of various backgrounds who also represent varying levels of academic ability. We have a newly renovated auditorium, a technology lab, a drama program, a Greek program as well as other enrichment and after-school programs.

The school itself boasts a print-rich environment which is welcoming and celebrates our scholars work. Although we share a campus with two high schools we work diligently to maintain a “family feel” to our community.

The faculty and staff at KAPPA IV demand high expectations from all of our scholars and all share the goal of success for our scholars. Our teachers have a wide variety of credentials, qualifications, experiences, and personalities and bring multiple teaching methods, techniques and styles to each classroom. Our child-centered philosophy ensures that all our children’s individual needs are always met. Moreover, our teachers are exceptionally caring and willing to provide appropriate programs for children at all levels of learning. Teachers are constantly working to differentiate instruction and continually take full advantage of professional development opportunities. Staff activities such as common planning and ongoing discussions about children help to promote a highly innovative atmosphere and a superior level of enthusiasm in teaching.

In addition, we are also fortunate that the diversity of our scholars provides a rich cultural awareness in each classroom. As previously stated, our goal is to educate and prepare our scholars to be leaders. To this end, we are exceptionally proud of our successful character education program. In fact, each month our entire compliment of scholars assembles and shares a program emphasizing a specific character trait. The students work hard to incorporate the trait into their behavior. The focus on traits such as empathy, responsibility and citizenship has helped create wonderfully caring and sensitive scholars.

Finally, involving the family in the student’s education is one of KAPPA IV’s priorities. In keeping with the green initiative, we communicate electronically with parents when possible. Through monthly meetings, special workshops and the efforts of both our Parent Coordinator and Parent Teacher Association (PTA), the KAPPA IV community is informed of and included in their child’s education. Our faculty and parents work together well beyond the conventional school day providing the students with programs that enhance learning and showcase our accomplishments.

We encourage all our parents to maintain communication with teachers via e-mail, phone calls, or visits to the school. Teachers are always happy to schedule an appointment to speak with you about your child by phone or in person. KAPPA IV’s success is a result of hard work and dedication designed to promote an ideal academic and social environment for the children.

Grading Policy

The KAPPA IV school year comprises 4 marking periods.  There are two formal Parent Teacher conferences as well as the distribution of interim progress reports.

School Attendance

It is the responsibility of parents to ensure that scholars attend school everyday. Additionally, scholars must report to class on time everyday.  Upon return from an excuses absence scholars must submit a written excuse signed by a parent/guardian/medical professional to the main office.  KAPPA IV recognizes the following as excused absences:
Personal illness
Death in the family
Approved school-sponsored activities
Religious observance
Emergency dental or medical visit

Unexcused absences are:
Vacation
Work
Babysitting

Last June, letters introducing the ARIS Parent Link (APL) were distributed to all parents. The first letter included a Student ID #, (or OSIS #) and the second letter contained a unique password for accessing the APL site. APL allows you to access the same information on your child that educators use. Contact Rosa Jaquez at (347) 563-5257 if you cannot locate these letters or numbers, need help logging on, do not have an email account, or need to access a computer for viewing your child's APL account at: www.ARISparentlink.org  Biographical information was added during the summer. If you note any discrepancies on your child's record, please use the APL update request form found here or in the main office.
